I want to write that this was an interesting story, but it wasn't really. On a comparative level, "Her Fearful Symmetry" has nothing on "The Time Traveller's Wife", and standing by itself - well, I wouldn't have read it if I hadn't loved Niffenegger's first book so much.

I didn't really like any of the characters; Robert and Valentina were my favourites, but even then they were rather pitiful and boring. Martin was an interesting one, but his story felt a little forced and at odd angles with the rest of the novel.

I think there just wasn't enough backstory or enough reason for Valentina to do what she did, it seemed like a overboard way of solving a rather simple problem. I don't think Elspeth was a particularly likable character - for me, but also I don't understand what Robert saw in her; once again there wasn't much backstory relating to Robert and Elspeth and considering that such a huge plot twist was related to these two, I felt irritated when the plot did turn.

The characters all seemed weak, pushovers, morose and mostly unlikeable. I didn't want to be them, or befriend them, and I didn't care enough to hate any of them. The story, although it started out okay, soon started to waffle and the twists and turns in the ending were just outright ridiculous.

I was pleasantly surprised by Mia's book. I got it as a light read, expecting it to be trash but I was hooked from the beginning and couldn't put the damn thing down.
