Impressive rendering of an equally impressive man. About TR's life up until his assumption of the presidency. Tales of his European zoological travels, boxing matches, Dakota ranching, midnight policework in NYC, reform lawmaking in NY and DC, and of course his charge of San Juan Hill, Cuba in the Spanish American War, which he basically started because he wanted to fight some country, any country. Every other page there was a new big word for me to learn. The highlight: his war whoop when he felled his first bison in the Badlands....less

"Sequel to The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt. My dad had this on Book-On-CD. When I found out there was a volume preceding it, I went to check it out. I decided to finish this second volume by paper, not audio.

Shazam! I like being a sports spectator but I don't read sports books a lot. This one was worth it. I knew f***-all about cycling and dammit now I know the terms peloton, drafting, and Miguel Indurain (I think that last one is a Portugese rice dish). This book was un-put-down-able but I attribute that to its intuitive size, shape, weight, and texture. Paperbacks are just easier to read....less

Caitlin and I were on our way out of town and we stopped by the library. I wanted to try something out of my normal book realm (business, personal growth, atlases, etc) so I told her to pick one out for me. She picked "The Blonde" and I picked a book aisle randomly, closed my eyes, and reached out to draw out this Obama book. I don't read many biographies but I figured this was as good a time as any to read about a potential president. It was a pretty good summary and it does show why people are down on Obama's lack of international relations experience. He took a couple vacations to Kenya that's about it. The author took some space talking about his news reporter experiences...boring! Going to read a McCain book as well, you know, to even the stakes....less

Wow. Intense. You think stories from a park ranger would involve cute anecdotes about children's curiosity or silly animal behavior. Not this one. It is a no-nonsense collection from this lady ranger who no doubt could pull my head off with one hand. Bloody and freaky, rife with drunks and psychotic behavior. Solid and informative....less

Read this for research purposes. The author relates everything back to Sweden. Yes we get it. You are Swedish.
The middle third is decent. But he makes numerous references without explaining them, expecting us all to know everything about Club Med. You call it a history, then you got some 'splainin' to do!
Edit: months later, I realize much of the stuff, whether I like it or not, has implanted itself in my brain. Good work Lofgren, you earn another two stars....less
