In general, I love Neil Gaiman's writings and stories, but as a (fairly liberal) mom, I would not read this book to the young children it's been packaged & marketed to (despite the "Ages 5 & Up" note on the inside front flap of the dust jacke...more

" I love love love! the illustrations in this book. It is different in a really cool way. However, the story lacks a through-line and doesn't make any sense. The only way to understand what the author is trying to say is by looking at the artwork. "
The Dangerous Alphabet by Neil Gaiman
" This is my least favorite of Gaiman's books. I hate the illustrations, I'm not entirely fond of the text, I don't always think it makes sense. I'm reading the other reviews for this books and wondering if maybe I got some sort of weird copy? Are w... " Read more of this review »
The Dangerous Alphabet by Neil Gaiman
" Riding in a bathtub, two children float through a creepy canal inhabited by trolls, monsters, skeletons, and other vile creatures in this bizarre ABC book. The intended audience for this tale is unclear, as the rhyming storyline is hard to follow,... " Read more of this review »
"You have a healthy 4-year old, good for her! See my review if you like-- it's an awkward book, and the front inside flap on the dust jacket of the cop...more "
"So well-spoken! As an art historian and children's book lover, I had to have this but I can only say that if your 5-year old daughter didn't like it,...more "

Martin's intelligence and depth bring meaning to these drawings/commentaries that I didn't expect in a humor book. I am always surprised by his perspective and perceptions of the world. He navigates our social and linguistic constructs deftly, reveal...more

Pablo Picasso
“What do you think an artist is? ...he is a political being, constantly aware of the heart breaking, passionate, or delightful things that happen in the world, shaping himself completely in their image. Painting is not done to decorate apartments. It is an instrument of war.”
Pablo Picasso

William Morris
“Nothing should be made by man's labour which is not worth making, or which must be made by labour degrading to the makers.”
William Morris

Anna Akhmatova
“You will hear thunder and remember me,
and think: she wanted storms...”
Anna Akhmatova

Pablo Picasso
“Others have seen what is and asked why. I have seen what could be and asked why not. ”

Gary Snyder
“Lay down these words
Before your mind like rocks.
placed solid, by hands
In choice of place, set
Before the body of the mind
in space and time:
Solidity of bark, leaf, or wall
riprap of things:
Cobble of milky way.
straying planets,
These poems, people,
lost ponies with
Dragging saddles --
and rocky sure-foot trails.
The worlds like an endless
Game of Go.
ants and pebbles
In the thin loam, each rock a word
a creek-washed stone
Granite: ingrained
with torment of fire and weight
Crystal and sediment linked hot
all change, in thoughts,
As well as things.”
Gary Snyder
