I have probably read this book at least 6 times and just reread in preparation for a class. Every time I return to it, its magic never ceases to amaze me. It captures the innocence, imagination, and insecurity of childhood/adolesence like few other books I have read. Forever grateful for the 5th grade teacher that first put this book in my hands. I hope this book never becomes outdates b/c I think it has timeless, universal appeal....less

A memoir that mocks itself and its genre, but also understands it. If you have an intersting story and you are capable of telling it...why not??? people will read it.......less

Really interesting. The book is narrated by an autistic/mathematical savant teenage boy. He investigates the murder of a dead dog he finds in his neighbor's yard. This investigation leads him on a long journey and reveals many secrets. However, the story is not the central part of this book; it is the perspective and narration. The world through the lens of autism is fascinating and the author does a great job of empathisizing and rationalizing the disorder. Although it is fiction, it provides knowledge and perspective on the disorder that is hard to find in much of the literature regarding autism. ...less

I love this book. It probably only appeals to those that might have interaction with middle school age children, but whether you are a parent, teacher, counselor, etc you will benefit by reading this book. You go through a year of school with about a half dozen or so middle school age kids in Maryland. It delves into their changes, attitudes, socializing, etc. She provides great insight into the minds and lives of these kids....less

This would probalby only appeal to parents of teenagers, but I had to read it for a class focusing on teaching Middle School Age kids. It is informative and has lots of good information regarding brain development for kids this age. He also does a good job of recommending effective ways to communicate with kids this age. Overall, it helps you understand these "special kids" more and is helpful....less

I really enjoyed this book. I wish I had refreshed myself on the Book of Genesis beforehand b/c I think some its genius was lost on me b/c I had not read these stories in several years. However, it was still a great story that spans several generations of two families and the land they inhabit. I thought Steinbeck's choice of narrator was very interesting. I kept expecting to encounter this character or learn more about him, but you never really learn more than his position in the family. However, this keeps it universal and allows you to form your own opinions regarding the main characters. I enjoyed most of the characters encountered in this story. They are very human and have very real faults, but you love them for their strengths and their flaws (minus one who is inherenlty evil and probalby one the best villians I can remember). It is long, but does not drag and he divides it up logically so that it is easy to read a few pages and put down without losing your place or the story which is nice for those of us that dont normally have more than 30 mins or so a day to read....less
