This is an inspiring and courageous story of perseverance, ingenuity, and fortitude. Dickens' picture of poverty truly doesn't hold a candle to the childhood of Jeannette Walls.
Though I have marked the book as five stars, I do so with a strong word of caution. I was told by a friend that this was a quick, easy read. Though it certainly wasn't difficult in a sense of vocabulary and understanding, I found it quite difficult due to two things, which, looking at it, could not have been changed without compromising the integrity of her story and the characters of the people she knew. First, the language spoken by her father was atrocious. I don't think I've ever come across a book or movie that has used more foul language than her father did. Second, the scenes depicted during her childhood - from starvation to sexual assault - were cringing. I don't recommend this book to anyone who may be sensitive to these things. It made me extremely uncomfortable at times, causing me to consider not finishing it. ...less
