Like you, I tend to toss those aside. However, I thought it was very simplistic, offering a view of "salvation" that someone who does not think too deeply could latch onto. That does not negate the view, it just didn't really grab me, and I read it strictly as a far-fetched story more than anything else. I read stuff, sometimes even if it is not very good, just to see what it is like. I read this one after hearing Oprah Winfrey rave about it, and have decided that her tastes and mine are not very close. She has introduced others, however, that are quite good. To answer your question, I don't think this is one you would give high ratings to. Now Baudolino, I thought was superb, but then I like everything Eco has written.

You're so right. And this story illuminated that return to fundamentalist views on both sides of the issue. It begs the question of who is right, and how far back do we go to justify our actions of today. Even as individuals, we tend to allow the past to guide our thoughts and actions in the now, and as the character in the book did, we compound that by attemtping to adjust ourselves to what we believe others percieve us to be. Perhaps in the end, we are all a little unbalanced or unstable, and need those things from the past to give us some direction, even if it may not be the best.

Hey Kat!

I loved that little book. It somehow grabbed me and really touched me deep inside. I know that many who read it did not care for it, but maybe I am just different. I am currently reading, The Shack," by William Paul Young, and just finished "You, The Warrior Leader," by Bobby Welch. Not sure how I will end up liking The Shack, but the Warrior Leader is by a minister in Florida who advocates Christians conducting themselves under the same principles as military warriors. He was seriously wounded in Vietnam, and later went into the ministry. He uses many examples of the selfless service of military men and women to serve as models for how others should live and conduct themeselves. It was not bad, and you and your Dad may find it interesting.
Love you,
Art
