So, I was hanging out in the library and decided to pick this us because the cover looked so atrociously bad that I wanted to make fun of it.
Except, see, I was wrong. That's how I ended up reading it. The book is hillarious. It plays to all the conventions of the bitter-Private-Investigator genre: the women are beautiful (the target used to be an exotic dancer!) the puns are abundant and horrible (Just look at the title!). The science and accompanying scientists are cheesy as hell ("This lens will merge your computer with your brain. It works great. Just have a few kinks to wrok out though." "Oh. How do I take it off?" "That's one of the kinks that we have to work out") and - did I mention the horrible puns? The book delights in them and being a science fiction novel just makes it easier.
The science fiction element doesn't disappoint. The words "Gates" and 'DOS" are used instead of "Devil" and "Hell"; the majority of Private Investigators work for the Entertainment Industry (The job makes for great reality TV shows). Computers are varied and the AI-protagonsit interaction is hillarious.
This is neither high-class humor, nor particularly good humor. But it is full of bad puns, intentionally ridiculous cliches and general amusement. There is a general feeling that the authors were enjoying themselves a lot as they were writing this- and as such, I highly recomend it....less
