There's a trend this century among non-fiction writers of using naivete as a writing style that is really starting to irritate me. The idea, I assume, is that a casual reader much prefers as a narrative companion someone as ignorant as themselves, a...more

Nothing wrong with it, but so slight it barely felt worth reading.

A Morbid Taste for Bones by Ellis Peters
" The first Brother Cadfael I have read. It was gentle and engaged me with thee place and period. It could have been a bit tighter. While Cadfael's solution was amusing, outrageous and historically suggestive, it needed, I thought, a little more pos... " Read more of this review »

Cute premise, reasonable execution. Would probably have been slightly better with a less convoluted plot.

Once again, this story suffers from not having been clearly placed in context, that of riffs on Shakespeare's plays, which to some extent explains the vey un-Frazer-like melodrama. Nevertheless, the story is told well enough.

Like most crime fiction short stories, the plot builds to a single twist, which I'd have to say gets tiresome when reading a few in a ow. But Frazer's Shakespeare is engaging and the premise is intruiging, so that's all good.

The plot twist was seeable early on, but the result is a nice examination of politics and survival, loyalty and fealty, in a society with very different rules to those we are used to.

Unsurprisingly, I ended up wanting of the political intrigue and less of the mystery. Pecock is well drawn, but these short stories aren't really enough to satisfy.

This story is well-written and interesting. Unfortunately, it was far more powerful in its original context of part of a series of short crime fiction based on Shankespearean characters. Without that, it is slightly more random than it deserves to be...more

Arundhati Roy
“To love. To be loved. To never forget your own insignificance. To never get used to the unspeakable violence and the vulgar disparity of life around you. To seek joy in the saddest places. To pursue beauty to its lair. To never simplify what is complicated or complicate what is simple. To respect strength, never power. Above all, to watch. To try and understand. To never look away. And never, never to forget.”
