The best part of this story is the relationship between Jena and the frog that she takes everywhere with her. The Frog communicates thoughts to Jena and gives her advice.
Otherwise, this is a story about a family of motherless girls who must survive the winter while their sick Father tries to recuperate in a better climate. Jena is the sensible one and she is put in charge of the family business and the romantic castle they live in in the mountains of Transylvania. Conflict ensues as their overbearing cousin Cezar attempts to take their lives and property. Almost as a side note, the girls have been journeying once a month into the "Other Kingdom" since they found the portal in their bedroom. This is a magical place where they dance and make friends with magical creatures. All this is threatened as Night People join the glade, older sister Tati is drawn to a mysterious pale young man, and Cezar resolves to destroy the magical world that he blames for all his problems....less

Aislinn can see faeries. These are not little forest faeries, these are human sized urban faeries who pinch, trip, and sometimes even kill people who catch their attention. Aislinn has spent her life avoiding the attention of the faeries she sees around her but now two of them are following her and there's nothing she can do to stop them...
Great book for teens and adults. It drew me in and even made me laugh and quote parts to Jason (much to his chagrin). ...less

5 teens have been selected to join horror writer Ian Tremblin for a night in an abandoned haunted house. They will spend the night telling their horror stories to eachother and only one will be selected to win a book deal. If any of them leave the house, they will automatically forfeit the contest.
It's hard at first to suspend the disbelief that a grown man will take the legal risk of spending the night alone with a group of coed teenagers. Beyond that, this is a fun premise and structure for a book. Each story the teens tell has a distinct different style.
It was like a teen version of The Haunting of Hill House but not as scary. It was more creepy and gloomy....less

This was a fun quick read. Jinx is so named because of a big blackout that occurred the night she was born and all the "bad luck" incidences that followed her after that. When the novel begins, she has arrived at her aunt and uncle's house in Manhattan to finish up the school year and the summer. She had been sent there because of some mysterious incident with a boy back home. She arrives to find two younger adorable cousins, a wonderful nanny, very generous aunt and uncle, and her beautiful cousin Tory who was fun 5 years ago but now is angry and mean. Jinx discovers that Tory is very determined to dabble in exactly the same kind of thing Jinx was trying to escape from and doesn't care about the dangers. Jinx and Tory have strong disagreements about the legend of their great, great, great, great grandmother and witchcraft. And it certainly doesn't help matters that they both would like to be more than friends with the hot guy who lives next door.
I thought it was predictable but enjoyable.
Good themes about power, responsibility, and the trouble that can happen when you don't accept yourself for what you are and embrace your own strengths....less

Just getting used to reading Manga. I'm still getting kind of lost and confused. This seemed OK. I liked when Risa said that Daisuke would not "improve her social standing" and when she talks about "my sworm enemy...my twin sister Riku!!!" and there's a picture of a super cute girl with crazy big eyes and a little cute manga mouth.
I suppose I'll have to read on in the series to see why there's this family curse of turning into the Phantom Thief Dark and stealing works of art. What kind of curse is that? What do they do with the art?...less
