Really interesting look at code-making and espionage in Britain during World War II, written by Leo Marks, a cryptographer working for British Intelligence. This is a one of the more interesting and easy to digest books I have read, and it has me now looking beyond my usual shelves at the bookstore, wanting to read more about the missions and coworkers he referred to in the book. Mr. Marks clearly has as much of a gift for writing as he did for cryptography, and while I am inclined to think that this was mostly fact based, I would not be shocked if there were parts he embellished or conveniently left out. I say this because it was such a consistently interesting and compelling book, but whether it was entirely fact based, or only partly -- I highly recommend this book, it was just a very entertaining read. ...less

I enjoyed this book. It was very a lovely, well-written comedy that made me want to spend some time on a tropical island. The book was supposedly born from an amusing story told over cocktails, then fleshed out by the experiences of the author and some acquaintances... and that's what it felt like. There are several distinct feelings in the book: There are times when it is a terrific comedy of errors, where you are routing for the hero, but terrified of what next challenge he's going to have to face. There are also poignant storylines based on love and relationships shared between friends and family.
There is also an interesting element in the attitudes of the characters. I believe that the book takes place in 1959, and the bulk of the characters consider themselves very liberal and modern... but there is a definite undercurrent of racism and classism.
It wasn't an incredibly fantastic book, but it was a great read for summertime and for getting ready to go to the beach. ...less

I hated this book. I was incredibly disappointed after liking the beginning of the series so much. I don't know if it was the new co-author, but I don't think so. The story was formulaic -- very similar plot to her previous novels -- and depressing. Although both stories had evil geniuses who were VERY evil, this story was totally devoid of hope. Yes, there are sadistic evil people out there -- but I believe that they are few and far between, and that everyone does has some good in them, even if it is ignorant and misguided. The author's themes are very played out and the book was a boring disappointment. I think the author needs some hugs and quite a bit if therapy to work out whatever issues she developed from being picked on as a child....less
