A fun romp through a somewhat altered Victorian London where vampires, werewolves, and ghosts are not only known, but productive members of society. Alexia, a preternatural and the protagonist, is an amusing character with a great personality--she's sassy, witty, and smart, and she's not afraid to use her specially-designed parasol (or hair pins!) on attackers when necessary. I loved the interactions between her and Lord Maccon, as well as her touchy relationship with her silly family, and her friendships with Lord Akeldama and Ivy Hisselpenny, both entertaining characters. Sarah's Key is a beautiful exploration of the importance of remembrance. The novel uses a dual narrative to follow modern day Julia as she uncovers secrets from the past, as well as following Sarah through her tragic experience of the Holocaust. The aftermath is far-reaching and affects the families of both women.
Julia's story could have been a mere sideshow, but she is a fully fleshed character and deals with her own modern issues--a husband gone astray, a pregnancy late in life, and the choices she must make along the way to move forward.

Picoult is the master at presenting tough questions and situations to her readers. She loves dropping her characters into dilemmas to discover the outcome, and this book is no exception to that. I expected a twist, especially after reading the Prologue, but the ending still surprised me. A beautiful and sad close to a thoughtful book. ]]>
