I didn't personally see it.

The book was, more than anything, a persuasive thing. She was TRYING to get you to want to see things from her perspective, because she was trying to make people change, so maybe that is where people though she was pushy? I thought for the most part her arguments were good and that she tried very hard not to come off as elitist or as though she was looking down on 'regular folks' that can't afford (or don't have the time to) eat like her and her family did.

This book radiated her pride and happiness in how her and her family lived their lives. Pride is not an evil thing to feel. It was a serious accomplishment, for them to do this thing, and they wanted to share it with folks, but throughout the book she did make many mentions of the fact that you don't need to do something this HUGE to make a change. Something as small as buying from a farmers market will make a difference.

If people failed to see that, it's probably because the book hit too close to home. I know that certain parts got me rankled, having worked on farms, I'm perfectly aware that tomatos aren't in season year round, and I found her assumption that 'most' people don't understand this to be frankly a bit... underestimative of the human population as a whole (but then later on the day I finished it I went to a pick your own blackberry stand and witnessed some folks trying to eat the unripe blackberries, thinking they were raspberries, so maybe then she's really not underestimating people that much...). But I still think her book did a good job of convincing people they can do things a bit differently. I know it made me rethink things, and I've found that several other people that read the book started making small changes in the way they do things.

So even if people don't like the book, or they disagree with her in some manner, I think she makes good points, and I think her book is having an impact. I do think it might have been nice to have a whole book devoted to the argumentative aspect of the book, and then another book with just the stories and tales and recipes, which I honestly enjoyed the most. ...less "
