Unlike some of the other reviews, i knew going into this book that it was loosely made up of several stories and characters that intertwine at one point or another. B.E.E. May not be for everyone, his nihlistic characters and stream on conscience writing could leave some nauseated. but, i seem to enjoy the way he catipults you into the california sun, constantly in the late afternoon and the sun is blazing directly into your eyes distorting your vision of the truth. the people B.E.E writes about are not good people, they are rich, spoiled and often very very bad. but you can easily immerseing yourself getting into the characters because sometimes it seems fun to be these people. they live their lives minute to minute and witout worry, care or consequences. nothing traumatic ill ever happen to these people that would cause them to change, and if it does, they have enough money or power to fix it.
I thoroughly enjoyed this novel, it isn't quite as good as Less Than Zero, but that is mainly due to the fact you are jumping from one character to another. but, because of that style, it feels like a sequel to Less Than Zero. ...less

Unfortunately I did not read this copy of this novel, I read just The Last Tycoon, which is hardcover and i making me wonder whether or not it could be worth something because it is pretty old.
As far as what is inside of this edition...wasn't all that great. That is not to say that is could have been something great if finished. As it stands, The Last Tycoon is a forgettable story with forgettable characters. i really could not wait until i finished it. At times i was completely intrigued, mainly when Monroe was involved in his Hollywood affairs. The love story is one not to be desired. it feels like it was thrown in there because at the time everything anyone wrote or filmed had to do with love.
The best part of the novel was reading the notes left behind by Fitzgerald on where exactly he wanted to go with the story, which gives the reader a little insight to the creative process of a master.

Not a book for the faint of heart. Chuck's newest novel is full of...well, smut. when first reading the premise of the novel, i figured that it made sense for him to write a book covering this culture. I already had an idea on how the book would read, and i was not taken off course. Snuff is somewhat captivating, mainly because how the novel is written (Oral biography style, like the the awesome, Rant)but lacks in subject and depth. Pahlaniuk tackles a subject (the porn industry) that not many (if any) mainstream writers would and chuck did not do it any justice. instead of trying to psycho analyze the players in the story, explaining why they are in the industry or why they are the way they are, he settles for cheap thrills and gross outs. but, this is mostly what makes Chuck Pahlaniuk entertaining. I guess no one really goes to read one of his novels expecting The Brothers Karamazov, so if you like Chuck Pahlaniuk, read Snuff....less

I originally chose to read this book because i had read great reviews and especially because i read that the Coen brothers are to turn into a motion picture. with that said, i had little knowledge on what the book was about or the style of the author. well, i was greatly surprised by both. the story begins as a typical mystery novel should but then later gets super deep. but, not deep liek you are reading a philosophy book, Chabon quietly takes you down the same path as the lead character, unlocking truths that are much bigger than you or Meyer Landsman. again, about halfway through the novel, Chabon takes a fairly large turn towards the almost absurd by mixing religion into this pulp murder mystery. this is when the awesome intrigue begins. i had a hard time putting this book down. granted, it is not the best novel i have ever read, it is still completely captivating and very entertaining....less
