For me, it felt weird to walk in to a story knowing that the original prime suspect couldn't have done it, that she was completely and utterly set up. I mean, with Mavis, I actually felt anxious, not because I'm really invested in the character. But with Rena? Not invested at all until nearer the end.

I thought it was a nice little glimpse into Caro and the Caro/Roarke relationship.

But yeah, Eve/Roarke relationship problems? BORING.

Plus all women love him and all men want to be him. It's just so... exaggerated!

Well, there was this one criminal who targeted our Officer in Charge a little while ago but it wasn't an elaborate game of cat and mouse where he kills people and places clues on their bodies. He created a website tracking the OIC's movements and spreading lies about him.

Maybe our criminals suck?

I've been putting that as a holdover from the 90s where most of the writers talked about how her hair flamed like fire licking at wood and her skinned glowed with an alabaster that rivalled the best ivory. It's cheesiness and over descriptiveness at its best :)

She also can't write a gay character properly. She tried once and he was okay but... yeah, there were a few things that I question.

This is my first JA Jance novel so I'm not sure if this is a great representation of her writing style. I'm willing to try another few books, just to feel it out a little more but this isn't a good book to start with.

I love that her character is older. I'm a little tired of characters with super amazing jobs and businesses but at in their mid to late 20s. The fact that the woman is in her 40s makes the story a little more realistic.

I'm not sure JA Jance really understands blogging though. I'm not exactly sure what feels off about how she describes it (outside of saying she "sends" her blog posts) but it just seems... odd, somehow.

Also, the main character? SELFISH and a little on the self-righteous side.

She talks about the Reenie (a woman who supposedly commits suicide because of her diagnosis of ALS) as her best friend from high school

Not bad. Really not bad. I don't think I've ever read a book by Heather Graham previously (though it's possible) and it was a pleasant surprise. There wasn't the intensity that I was expecting from a book with such a provocative title but it grabbed my attention and kept it.

Which made the ending so much more disappointing but that's my own issue. I felt the rise to the conclusion was ridiculous considering the actions of the characters throughout the rest of the book. However, once again, that's just my issue.

I recommend. Good atmosphere, enough suspense, good characters and I only very occasionally thought, "Huh, Karen Rose or Elizabeth Lowell might have done better," and that in and of itself is quite a victory.
