I was fortunate to see Dave Eggers at the New Yorker Festival in 2005. I originally went to see Sherman Alexie and Dave Eggers opened for him. I serendipitously learned about a new author. I started reading this book last night and I devoured every word. I couldn't put it down. I love books such as these where you would rather stay in and read rather than a night out with friends....less

I love the Haggis-on-Whey books. They are hillarious and mere nonsense. What you learn about giraffes are that they arrived to this planet via a conveyor belt. They are one of the top 5 misunderstood animals. Sworn enemies of all giraffes are The Gila monster, the toucan, the Queen of Norway, and Matthew Perry. Just a little tidbit on Giraffes which I learned from this book....less

So far the book has been okay. At times the main charachter Elizabeth gets on my nerves. I chose this book because I thought it related to things I do best; eat food, prey on men, and I love everyone. It is a good book for someone in need of spiritual guidance.
I found that I was unable to relate to the main character, Elizabeth. Me being a self-indulgent person can not understand her rigid and disciplined ways. For example, when she was studying Italian in Rome I would have slept with Giovanni (and probably his twin brother too, Dario). The entire time I kept saying to myself "you idiot". That is the best medicine for getting over an ex. Everyone is different, plain and simple.
Additionally, I was unable to relate to her spiritual quest in search of God. I was not raised with any relgion or faith, my parents decided to let me chose my own. The one part of the book I could relate to was during her stay in India she had a struggle with her way of thinking. I have taken my classes and seminars on the ways that humans think and find it highly fascinating. I always try to alter my way of thinking to see how it impacts my life. I regarded one her passages "You are, after all, what you think. Your emotions are the slaves to your thoughts, and you are the slave to your emotions". ...less

David Byrne from the Talking Heads is highly facinated with conceptial design and has published several books on desgin.
This book can go hand and hand with Edward Tufte's "The Cognitive Style of Powerpoint". Within E.E.E.I. David Byrne utilizes powerpoint as an artistic medium rather than for the corporate world, who it caters for. It is true that Powerpoint is a creative endeavor that allows humans to peresent their information in a constructive and artful way. But the issue is, as both Tufte and Byrne argue, that it is so easy to use that it can make any idiot appear to know what they are talking about. It is not even necessary to be an art major to use it.
The first adaption of Powerpoint was released back in 1984 in black and white! and was originally called "Presenter". The Design in E.E.E.I. is splendid. I do not own a copy but am interested in purchasing it. I checked out a copy at the Univeristy Art Library. I have never been a fan of Powerpoint and also wondered what the hype was about it. That is when I read Edward Tufte's blurb on it. Say bye bye to gaudy graphics and cluttered text and you have no idea how many lame powerpoint presentation I have had to sit through....less
