"I still own my original copy of this, from when I was a kid. I intend to read it to my child, in the hope that it expands his vision of the world, like it did me. Love this book!!!

A pretty good primer for the burgeoning no-wave scene coming out of the industrial movement in the late 70s. Any book that includes SWANS and Neubauten is always going to get points! On the other hand the lenghty interviews with Steve-O (founder of 'Some Bizarre' records and rip-off artist) get a bit boring. Of course, during this time inventing who you were was part of the thrill; an attitude of cinderblock was de rigeur...ah, those were the days! Modern music is missing a LOT of the angry-young-man (and woman!), DIY aesthetic that these bands had, and in most cases, still do!...less

I'm not rating this book because it's simply impossible. The first three 'sections' are the part I own, apparently now out of print. It's true, Sotos' greatest crime is verisimilitude, and therefore the words in this book accomplish what many authors can never do. They terrorize, pick and tear at the psyche, revel in the abject horror of the worst realities of the human condition. It's a train wreck for sure, but one painted by a realist master. NOT FOR KIDS, THE WEAK-MINDED, OR YOUR MOM. Please, not you mom! Damn!...less

James Hillman is winding up being one of my favorite post-Jungian 'philosophers', for lack of a better term, a definition which I fully believe the man himself would chafe under.
His reworking of dream therapy invokes the classical underworld of Greco-Roman mythology, not as an interpretive symbol or force, but as literal as the 'self' in the dream, that must be taken as it is, without analysis, for any sort of eventual therapy to begin. His eventual use of the patients recognition of the dream-self is an extension of his grand work, the ability of the patient to examine (but not necessarily define) an item as slippery as quicksilver, the soul. Of course, the very definition of the soul is up for grabs, but one that is exquisitely well thought out by Mr. Hillman.
An engrossing read for anyone interested in modern psychiatry, or actual dream therapy without resorting to the new-age dingbattery offered by the airport bookstore crowd....less

Absolutely indespensible as a historical guide to classic cuisine, as well as a byzantine collection of oddities, rare recipes, and general foodie goodness. Some of the recipes are indeed quite dated, from ingredients (crow stuffed with juniper, anyone?) to measurements (take 'some' flour...) However, if I had all the information in this in my head, I could easily cook for the Marquis himself. One entry leads to another, to another, to another, in a spellbinding tome that you will want to read in a kitchen by candlelight....less
