I kind of wanted to give this 4.5 stars. I loved it, but not THAT way. Style wise, it really reminded me of "White Teeth" in many ways, but I think that Zadie Smith did it better. Maybe it was the Caribbean thing, or the youngness of the Authors, or the big prizes attached to the book that are making me draw parallels. I loved this story, though my non-Spanish speaking lameness interfered a bit. Pretty sure I learned a lot of new naughty words though. I just re-read this and am completely torn. On one hand the imagery is powerful and un-paralleled. On the other hand, I can't get over how awful these men are to women, endlessly leaving their wives and kids to have sex with 15 year old mexican prostitutes. I am totally conflicted about the characters- should I be slightly disguised? Should they make me sad? What the hell is Sal's unrelenting attraction to Dean? In this day and age, what would Dean be diagnosed as? Schizophrenic? Bi-polar?
