"But the poor person does not exist as an inescapable fact of destiny. His or her existence is not politically neutral, and it is not ethically innocent. The poor are a by-product of the system in which we live and for which we are responsible. They are marginalized by our social and cultural world. They are the oppressed, exploited proletariat, robbed of the fruit of their labor and despoiled of their humanity. Hence the poverty of the poor is not a call to generous relief action, but a demand that we go and build a different social order."

“Perfectionism is the voice of the oppressor, the enemy of the people. It will keep you cramped and insane your whole life, and it is the main obstacle between you and a shitty first draft. I think perfectionism is based on the obsessive belief that if you run carefully enough, hitting each stepping-stone just right, you won't have to die. The truth is that you will die anyway and that a lot of people who aren't even looking at their feet are going to do a whole lot better than you, and have a lot more fun while they're doing it.”

First-person, written in a coffee shop in a stream of consciousness on a napkin after I ran into someone who made my heart jump into my throat. Fall 2006.

Description:
I wasn't having a very good time right as I was about to graduate college. I was excited to be done, but I missed my best friend and ex-boyfriend (one and the same person) though I would never have been wise or humble enough to admit it; I didn't know what I wanted to "do" with my life (that's changed slightly, perhaps) and though a lot of happiness-inducing events were going on I was not experiencing the joy one might expect. Therefore I wrote about it to work it out a bit.

Description:
Levi is my orange cat and was a great friend to me during my undergraduate years.
This was written on my 23rd birthday, at a time when things were not going so well and I was anxious about what life would hold for me after graduation. Levi, as always, was a good listener.
On Grandpa's Funeral Program (Biographies & Memoirs)

Description:
I wrote this when my grandpa passed five years ago. His funeral was on 3/26/2004.
My grandpa and I were very close as far as grandfathers and granddaughters go, and his death really shook me.
I am happy with this writing for the most part though the punctuation needed editing. There was no proofreading done and the first draft is what was printed as I was upset; I have never actually edited it since it was written as it's still upsetting.
