Some Prefer Nettles by Jun'ichirō Tanizaki
"This book wasn't bad but I didn't enjoy it. It's well-written and not boring or anything but I didn't like either the subject matter or the characters. There wasn't a single person I could relate to or that I remotely enjoyed reading about. This d..." Read more of this review »

Some Prefer Nettles by Jun'ichirō Tanizaki
"I'm trying to distance myself from the cultural and time differences I experienced and still, as much as try to, I cannot really say I liked the book. Some Prefer Nettles is not at all a badly written book, but unfortunately there was nothing in t..." Read more of this review »

I found this dull, and thankfully short. Uninspired upper-class characters, described without pizazz, having mundane problems in their mostly problem-less lives. Perhaps it is all the fault of the translator?

Excellent. A very well-crafted story with some exceptionally developed characters.

Lacking in prominent, strong, sane, female characters, though.

Weak. Terribly sexist. The "genetic memory" stuff is particularly laughable.

"I hate hate HATE epistolary novels. I hate sexist books. I hate books that don't follow their own internal logic/ rules. I hate this book."

A very good, unusual read. I'm not sure what to think of the book overall, but every page was pleasant, interesting reading.

Lots of historical and anecdotal pieces of information and observations about figure drawing. The author's tendency to generalize from his personal experience and his near-misogynistic commentary rather put me off. Overall, an okay read.
