How much did I love this book? A lot, that's how much. I take back what I said about Harry not seeming like a real character to me - he's gaining complexity as each book reveals more about him.
Also, this book has the best one-liners ever, due to the wonderful interaction between Harry and Michael. When 20% of the book should be on a t-shirt, you know you've reached Pratchettean levels of repartee....less

Butcher seems to be adding secondary characters and more elements of his fantasy world as the series goes on, so the depth of the books is increasing too. I especially like this because, even though I love the books, Harry isn't a really great stand-alone character for me. He has a tendency to read like a self-insert wouldn't-it-be-cool-to-be-this-character rather than a real person. The plotting was well done and the idea of the Faerie summer and winter courts was something cool that I'd never come across before. I'll definitely be continuing the series to see what comes next....less

Ignore the clinch cover (unless you like those) and trust me when I say that this RITA-award winner has funny, snappy dialoge (and a HAWT SCOTTISH WEREWOLF), an intriguing premise (and a HAWT SCOTTISH WEREWOLF), a well-built paranormal world (and a HAWT SCOTTISH WEREWOLF), and did I mention the hawt Scottish werewolf?
Emmeline is a half-vampire, half-Valkyrie. She doesn't seem to have much in common with either of her supernatural bloodlines, however. She's more of a Hello Kitty vampire, with tiny little cute fangs, the inability to squish a bug, and a serious shyness problem. Then Lachlan, the king of the werewolves (did I mention the hawt Scottish werewolf?) tracks her down because he has realized that she's his mate.
At first I was worried that this was going to be one of those Alpha-male, subservient fainting woman romances, but Cole doesn't go there. At first the relationship is balanced only because Lachlan has been out of commission for a couple of hundred years and needs Emma to help him navigate modern society, but Emma grows believably as the book goes on (and not only because she's met The Guy, but because she's on a quest of her own) so that she's more than a match for Lachlan. The HEA is well-deserved. Woo-hoo!
This one is rated five jalapenos for extreme spiciness....less

This got a good review from the folks at Smart Bitches, Trashy Books, so I knew I was in for a good romance read. And it was. Picture Inara from Firefly in a Regency romance (yep, the heroine is the one with "scandalous ways") and you sort of have an idea of the tone of the book. I particularly like when romance novels have good secondary characters and senses of humor, and this one definitely does....less
