I picked this book up as it is set in Manchester, where I live. It's set back in 2002/3 and captures the mood and essence of the city of that era quite well. I found myself nodding along with certain depictions and descriptions.
The characters are quite well drawn and involving, and the plot moves along at a good pace.
I saw the twist coming early, but that didn't detract from my enjoyment of the book. ]]>

I'd forgotten how completely hatstand this book is in places. It fairly crackles along though, with an interesting narrative technique leading you along the way.
Bizarre conspiracy theories clash with wonderfully drawn characters and big doses of black humour to provide a rollercoaster tale of chance and whimsy.
Some of Alby's observations would cause any reader to nod along in agreement. Despite some obvious defects, he's such a warm character that you can't help but be drawn into his chaotic existence. ]]>

I first read this over 20 years ago, with the perspective of a teenager. I thought the book was vacuous then, it didn't relate to my life in anyway, the characters were ghastly, shallow, almost ghost like in their existence.
However, re-reading it now, I can see how prophetic it was in general. What seemed a world away then, now merely reflects today's empty generation. Little of substance is valued, instead it mere fleeting sensations that are prized, labels and conspicuous consumption are to be lauded.
The writing itself is terse and reflects the emptiness of the characters lives. I felt some scenes were merely there for effect, although they did serve to change the pace of the book.
Overall a depressing read, but then you can't sweep everything under the carpet. ]]>
