"I'm listening to the audiobook. Unusually, Audible has broken this book up into 4 separate "volumes" to be purchased separately. I've bought 2 and have finished listening to the first one--much about the Senate and some about Johnson. We're now at about 1951. I'm taking a break for some fiction but will certainly finish this fascinating book." Feb 14, 2014 12:09PM

It took me two solid months of dog-walking and listening at other times to finish this book, and since other long-awaited books were calling to me, I was sometimes tempted to take a break, but I feared that if I stopped listening I would not resume. ...more

I think I have a mental block about New Hampshire. A good many of my ancestors started out there, but had all moved to Maine by the time the 1790 census was taken. And, when one's home state borders only one other, all that contiguous-state-rivalry s ...more

I read this book at a time I was not being good about reviewing, so I'm updating much later. I'd suggest reading some of the other 5-star reviews, with which I concur. I especially liked the Berlin setting since I lived there for a year, and the auth ...more

Didn't finish -- again, partly because it was an interlibrary loan book that had to go back, but if I had liked it better I would have had time to read it. It's one of Christie's earlier books and that shows. The protagonist is a young woman, but Col ...more

I almost finished this book -- it was an interlibrary loan and I had to return it. In any case I reached the section where the author explains why American dress went to hell in a handbasket in the 1960s. As someone who came of age in those years, I ...more

I didn't like this quite as well as the earlier books in this series. As nurse Bess Crawford and Sergeant-Major Simon Brandon search a fairly small portion of the English countryside for a wounded soldier who disappeared while in Bess's care, the sto ...more
