Christa Weil’s Fierce Food compiles over 70 different foods from around the world into a compact and witty general reader’s encyclopedia. While some foods are brought up merely to shock (human placenta) and some to dispel myth (live monkey brains), the more verifiable morsels prevail. Among them are: Durian (a stinky fruit), Hakarl (rotten shark meat), dog meat, quaq (Alaskan frozen meat), blubber, snake, armadillo, sheep’s head, worm-infested Casu Marzu, various insects and larvae as well as the plague-carrying, Mongolian boodog, which is cooked from the inside out using hot stones.
For the most part, Weil focuses on delicacies that are a bit gnarlier looking, potentially hazardous or hard to obtain. Bone marrow is still on her menu, but old standards like tripe, intestine, ears or brains go unmentioned. There are also some dishes, Foie Gras, for instance, that don’t really fit the pattern. In those instances where Weil doesn’t seem to have put in any legwork, she draws upon the writings of various explorers and scientific studies for historical and culinary background and her writing style is engaging enough to compensate for the lack of pictures throughout the book. While it’s true that many of these foods can be seen braved or prepared on television shows like Fear Factor and The Travel Channel's Bizarre Foods, the cost of Andrew Zimmern only drives one further into the arms of this perfect short-range travel companion.
