Choosing a books is such a complex train-wreck of different concerns. Sadly, a pretty cover does help, even with "cultured" readers. If the cover art resembles a book you've read and didn't like, you're automatically taking points away from the current book you're looking at. Titles aren't easy to do. Ideally, they should reflect the book's essence and give a tantalizing idea of what to expect, albeit with an inherent double meaning only gained after reading to the end. Yeah, that's not hard or anything.

Other things I look for (in a book by an author I don't know): 1) First line 2) Blurb by a known author 3) Good, engaging cover copy

Whatever grabs me, something has to. Walking by shelves of books, there has to be some method for cutting one out of the group and determining that it's worth your many-hour commitment to it. This is why we tend to read known authors until they let us down. We want a reliable product from someone we trust.
