Fresh from reading Venditti's sci-fi GN about a world where humans have become ridiculously over-dependent on technology, I feel a little guilty using the intertubes to announce my reading habits. But The Surrogates does what science fiction is supposed to do: it reflects on the ethics of technology while telling a good story.

A quick read that will stay with you, the most poignant part of the tale is the relationship between Lt. Greer and his wife. Also deeply affecting, for different reasons, is the proposition, revealed late in the novel, that surrogates will soon be made available to children. While the former sub-plot is bittersweet, the latter is simply terrifying. Both however, cause one to realize what is at stake.

As Steeplejack would have it: "Live."

Okay. I understand why it's kind of a big deal: The characters are complex... when compared to other mid-80's graphic novels/works of sequential art. They aren't remarkably complex when compared to the characters of more traditional literature - the nameless narrator of Ellison's Invisible Man, for example.

Where the book does stand out, and may be justly praised, is in its consideration and presentation of its theme. In this regard, the most flattering comparison may be with Oedipus Rex. Both texts ask: "At what price truth?" and, "at what price peace?" Where in Oedipus the truth is personal and the peace is with the gods, in Watchmen the truth is political and the peace is with the Russians. While the fundamental question is worth asking, the subsequent rumination is more satisfying if it is timeless, personal, and metaphysical. This is why we still read Sophocles; I doubt Moore will be as highly praised two millennia from now.
