I just received this book and am obsessed--is it the chaste love between the characters, the teen angst that we can all identify with, the vampires (reminiscent of my love of the vampire chronicles as a teen myself)? I don't know but I do know I'm leaving work early today to get some reading in on the second book before my kids get home. I can't believe I just found out about this? What rock have I been living under? I guess when you have a 3 year old and a 6 year old, you're not running in the traditional Twilight group...

This is one of my favorite books of all time--I reread it periodically and fall in love again each time. I named my daughter Scout because of this book. What can I say about it that hasn't been said? Fantastic.

Wow, I loved this book--that it was set in post-war America, the 1950's but it could have been today...the descriptions of the "empty hopelessness" some feel in the suburbs. Don't you wonder about people today? The writing was fantastic, the thoughts of the characters so well developed, I can't say enough good about this book. It's depressing and enlightening and completely drew me in. I couldn't put it down.

It will be interesting to see as a movie with DiCaprio and Winslet as the stars. Kate Winslet will be fantastic as April as the character reminds me in some ways of the character she played in Little Children (another story of suburban angst).

I loved this book.

I kind of enjoyed this book but it paled in comparison to Devil in the White City in some ways (Go read Devil in the White City if you haven't read it, then we'll talk. I couldn't put that book down with the dual story of the Chicago Expo and the murdering doctor. More entertaining that this one!)

I had read so many positive reviews of this book prior to reading it that my hopes were built up perhaps too high. It's a fun read about a Huckster and the early 20th century--be glad you weren't sick at that time as medicine was not advanced--and the innovations of the "Doctor" at the center of the story. It is quite interesting to read how he transformed some aspects of advertising, campaigning, public relations and radio into what we take for granted today even while murdering tens of men in the sake of science.

Overall a fun read but I wouldn't buy it.

As you might imagine, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Some parts have been criticized heavily (as I tell my students when I talk about it, I'm just the messenger) but other parts are fascinating. It's a good introduction to some of the newer areas of economics and the kind of questions some economists are beginning to tackle. Economics is more than "money" and this book shows how far Steven Levitt has gone in his studies. Some areas are very controversial but others are just plain fun. Good read.

YIKES!!!!!!!!!! Oh my goodness--I am so glad I don't have a teenage girl right now. What am I going to do when my own three-year-old is ready for college? Don't read this if you know anyone about to go to college and pledge a sorority, especially in the South. The 80's seem wonderful compared to this current reality.
