4 STARSThis is the first book I've read by this author and I truly enjoyed it. Very easy to read yet not at all fluffy, it is a poignant story that is very different from most of the fiction I've been reading lately. I loved the voice of the novel - a 13 year old boy - and the author did an excellent job! I can't imagine its easy to write in the voice of a 13 year old boy but she does it in an amazing way! I really enjoyed the story - it was heart-warming and inspiring. I wondered the whole time where the author would take the story, feeling like it could only go badly. However, she effectively pulls off the ending - one which takes a potentially bad situation and makes it one of hope. Very interesting book that I definitely recommend.

5 STARSWOW. This was my first graphic novel and what a way to start! I couldn't put it down. I picked it up late in the evening, intending to read a few pages before bed. Next thing I knew, I was at the end and STUNNED by how wonderful the entire experience of reading it was. This is an amazing novel. The words were sparse, the imagery AMAZING. I couldn't believe just how effective David Small was in making me FEEL things via the images in this book. I went back and read it a second time immediately because I couldn't believe how much I loved this book. This family and its impact on this boy kept me riveted as did getting to see the world through his eyes. It's an amazing story of loss, anger, pain and ultimately healing and hope. I can't recommend this one more. I think I'll buy this one for my personal library. This is one that I will want to go back to in time. Just amazing. I can't say enough about how wonderfully done this graphic novel is ... Read it. Seriously.

which is my all time favorite book of poetry! I love Anne Sexton and hadn't read the entire book of poetry in at least 20 years so it was wonderful to go back and find that I love her poetry even more today than I did when I was a teenager!So, 20 points and the book is 628 pages long. That brings me to 50 pts total, 4 books total read.

I've read this so much that the pages are falling out in places which probably gives some indication of how much I adore Anne Sexton. Live or Die was something that just spoke to me when I was a teenager and I would read those poems over and over, amazed at her ability to 'paint a picture' with words so elegantly. I also adored her Transformation poems. She was amazing and interesting and neurotic.
12/10/09 - read this a second time and loved it even more than I did as a teenager. Wow. She's amazing. ]]>
