I'm a thorough anti-Bushite who believes he's lead (or more accurately NOT lead) this country into a domestic and foreign relations/policy mess that will take decades to clean-up. And that's when I'm optimistic.
I picked the book up after having read the reviews promising that it was an objective look at how Bush got us to this point. My goal was to actually be able to read something about the man that would not make me start yelling back at the pages.
This really is an objective overview as to how the potential of W (yes, the author does make a case for potentail, believe it or not) was squandered. The hypothesis is how the family dynamic of not only W.'s immediate family, but immediate ancestors influenced his thought processes and the actions he took. It also deals with how this also effected how he chose his advisors, and how his adviors used what they knew about his personality to further their own agendas.
I would recommend it as a non-emotionally charged look at what is indeed a tragedy....less

The book started out a little slow, but kept my interest. The premise is that the govenment has built a superconductor beneath the mesas of Arizona to recreate the "Big Bang". This is seen as an opportunity by the opponents of the president during the election year to rally the religious conservatives. This sets up a (literal) battle between the Creationists and science, especially as the scientists in charge of the project believe they have been speaking with God through the superconductor. The characters are stereotypical, so my interest was in the story, not the characters. The ending, however, was somewhat of a let down for me and had me slip from a 4 stars to 3 stars rating. That, and the fact that I was left with the feeling that at some point, someone will make a "Da Vinci Code" type movie.
* perhaps a spoiler*
The ending provides the answer to the "is it God or not" question. I would have preferred to have had it not ended that way. I'm firmly in the science camp as, obviously, is the author. However, I think leaving the question unanswered would have left me debating some larger questions raised....less
