I had to quit this book halfway through.
It interrupted a very long period of lots of good reading, and I'm:
- Willing to assign blame to it
- No longer willing to read it
- Tired of looking at it sit there on the shelf
Why? Because if I wanted to read a realistic, compelling story about someone who was constantly brought down by the industrial world and who continually did their meager best to fight back only to get trounced harder, I would JUST LOOK OUTSIDE AND SEE HOW A PLURALITY OF PEOPLE IN THE WORLD HAVE TO LIVE.
So that's all, nothing against the brilliant Coetzee, just I could not stand to get to know one more imaginary person who suffered like Micheal K. did. Yes, K. had it that bad, and yes, Coetzee is that good at conveying false hope.
