Gideon's Trumpet by Anthony Lewis chronicles the landmark US Supreme Court decision, Gideon v. Wainwright, that finally established a defendant's right to counsel in criminal cases. The book summarizes the life of Clarence Earl Gideon, a chronic law-breaker from the gulf coast, who was convicted of petty larceny in Panama City, Florida. Lewis then describes the subsequent appeals and explains the relevant legal history leading up to Gideon's hand-written appeal to the US Supreme Court.

Anthony Lewis does an admirable job of minimizing jargon while providing adequate detail. He maintains a very human perspective, yet avoids obvious bias. Overall, Lewis is engaging without being wordy. Gideon's Trumpet falls short of five stars because it wanders at time and is not as well organized as it could have been.
Astra and Flondrix combines high fantasy with adolescent humor. It's good for a laugh and it's appropriately short.

Premise - excellent. Maybe I just found the reincarnation thing a little too precious a device.

Admirable project, just a little heavy-handed in parts and too sprawling to really get invested in it.(less)
