I love this discussion of book covers- I couldn't buy an edition of an Austen novel that had a horrible cover. And there are so many bad ones!!! Those Twlight-inspired covers are certainly shameless, but Austen and Bronte are in such a completely different realm from Meyer that it seems a little silly to link the too.
And those readers for kids-as one who recently graduated from children's/YA literature, I don't think kids need to be given a "teaser" early on to want to read great literature when they're ready. On the other hand, it would seem these books would assure kids they know the books, when all they know is a pared-down version of the plot- and so destroy the dramatic tension if they do get to the original works. Thoughts?
-I think it was Penguin Readers that put out a bunch of classics with cool, color pictures on the cover that really worked well...but I can't seem to find it now.
-The vintage classics ones can be really cute (http://www.amazon.com/Sense-Sensibility-...)
-I really love this edition of Mansfield Park (http://www.amazon.com/Mansfield-Park-Oxf...)

I am a ruthless and truthful editor. My friends at school would tell you how I gleefully rips to shreds any paper they send my way. Feel free to send me any (prose) you'd like an edit on- I am trying to be more sensitive, I promise.
I love giving and getting book recommendations- especially ones that fit in will with previous likes/dislikes.
As for my own work, I'm just starting out. My poems are simple- usually focused on one concept or event, and including lots of visual stimulation (need to work on incorporating other senses). I am actually a stronger fiction writer. I love internal monologue, probably as a result of my being such a big Jane Austen fan. Inevitably, my protagonists end up being young girls like myself.

Wow, thanks so much for all the help! Some other ones on here, like Secondhand Lions and Balto have been winners with my family. Balto was definitely a staple of my childhood...antitoxin, Rosie- what was the name of the evil dog? Great, great movie.

Quick update: I have an official working Thesis statement now, which is:"Adequately prepared individuals will benefit from reading Jane Austen because of her exceptional use of satire which she uses to express truths about human nature and relationships."
So when I did Brit Lit P&P was just a read aloud, which was definitely a disappointment to me, but I just found out that P&P has been cut from our Literature curriculum at our school! So my goal is to get it back in, this time as a mainstay of the curriculum. I know one of my main tasks is going to make JA seem FUN, which I know might very well be harder than very serious analysis.
