This is a beautifully written story, told from the point of view of a thoughtful, young somali girl-woman. The story is poignant, but stressful for the reader. This is not simply the result of caring for a mistreated protagonist, but the result of the protagonists constant and overwhelming confusion. She is not afraid to take a chance, and takes many. She seem to make these decisions in a haze, unclear about the morality of her decisions, unclear regarding their consequences. I was left hoping for her, but would not be surprised if she ultimately faced ruin as a 'fallen' woman. ]]>

I completely disregarded SYFY as a reader and a viewer for the first 30+ years of my life... until my boyfriend --> fiance --> husband brought it on full force. I laughed while I watched Star Trek, until I became a bonafide Trekkie. Months later, I was desperate to find an audiobook that might hold my attention during my hour long commute, and fill the void I was feeling since I no longer had time to read. My husband surprised me with The Caves of Steel, and I immediately liked it.
This is the first time I have made it through an audiobook. I consider that a testament to how well the story is written and narrated. The story is a Sci Fi mystery, and is interesting both through its portrayal of a future society as well as its mystery plot. I was horrified by what Earth and the USA had become in the future, but charmed by the idea that this idea of a future society was created 50 years ago.
Now that I consider it, it is not at all surprising that I have so readily warmed to the genre. It represents a fantasy world, much like magical realism, a genre I have also enjoyed. ]]>
The story of a daughter reeling in the days after her mother's unexpected death, seethes with the vivid near hallucination and the rapid nearly pressured thought that i recall from Ferrante's "Days of Abandonment." Incidentally, it is also remniscent of the more controlled " The Year of Magical Thinking" by Joan Didion...only because both describe a chaotic reaction to death.
Probably deserves 4 stars, but I just liked, and related to, the chaos in Days of Abandonment a bit more. ]]>
