After so many years of books and movies and plays, etc...you finally get to the point where you don't expect the movies or tv shows that are based on books to be accurate as much as we would like them to be. So the same concept should work the other way around with a back story such as this. And let's be honest when you want to compare it to a Broadway musical, but as I love them, the ones that are written for the stage today has a lot of expense tacked onto the success of it, so it's going to be written with the give the audience what they want to see in mind. Like the old adage of comparing apples to oranges, in other words...stop trying to compare at all. What I liked about this book wasn't just that it gave a backstory to the Wizard of Oz, but that the imagination of Mr. Maguire gave it such a vibrant story. So many little things that just made me smile, "How clever." (She calls her sister, My Pretty...loved it..)What I wasn't expecting was the tale of morality that the author delves into at great length, and, thankfully, never gives the reader any pat answer to these dilemas, but expects you to come to your own conclusion. It wasn't at all what I was expecting it to be, and I am extremely glad I read it. ]]>

Still the longest running off broadway play ever? Correct me if I'm wrong. Simple in it staging, it leaves room for the beautiful music and characters to shine above everything. ]]>

This play and a couple of others were what I would call the catalists to my decision toward a theatrical career. The beauty, tragedy, and comedy of the story are all shining examples of Paul Zindel's paradox of writing. From gentle beauty to accerbic venom, it is all here in these pages. Though I saw it in the 70's, it's themes of family disfunction and self esteem, maily the lack of it, serve just as well today. And the short, if not magnanimus, monologue of Janice Vickery's on how to skin and boil a cat for her science fair project is the blackest humor you will ever find. ]]>
