I am savoring this, that's for sure. I reached page 200 today, roughly one-third of the way through. It isn't a book that I feel good about reading on a quick trip on the bus or for five minutes while I'm waiting; I want to give it serious attention and devotion when I pick it up. It isn't a difficult or demanding read, per se, but challenges you to be there, in the family, in the moment, in order to be rewarded for your efforts. That's what I think so far, anyway.
Last night I read a passage that hit me hard, the passage about the atomic bomb video. The clarity of the description, the weight and immediacy and emotional impact rivaled anything that I've ever read in Delillo. It was awesome, in the truest dictionary sense.
One last thought: I'm struck by the sense that I know so much about Everett, Peter, Irwin, and both of the Chance parents, that I have an understanding of who they are and how they are, and yet I know so little about the story's narrator, Kade. It seems like a pretty interesting smash-up of limited first-person P.O.V. and third-person omniscience where somehow the narrator's character and plot get lost in the big family shuffle. Is Kade the least interesting brother, or does he just not enjoy talking about himself? I think that I can relate...

I'm only halfway through this one, but I'm gonna go ahead and post some thoughts now. I just started reading on Sunday, and I have been completely swept away and encouraged by this book. I can't remember the last time that I could say that a book was an encouragement to me. These short essays are so readable, so laugh-out-loud-able, so charged, and so heartfelt; I've got to recommend this highly.
This is my third tangle (tango?) with Ms. Lamott: I wasn't a big fan of "Traveling Mercies," her first collection of spiritual and life thoughts, or (infamously to one) her novel "Blue Shoe." But somehow she totally has my number with "Plan B: Further Thoughts on Faith". I guess my way of thinking and I have changed some in the intervening years (4? 5 maybe?), and I think that somehow her perspective is slightly different, too. Take this with a grain of salt, but I found those former two books to be so overwhelmingly female. "Traveling Mercies" especially was recommended to me with such a tidal wave of praise from so many different female friends that I was sorely disappointed when I didn't really connect with it. Something about "Plan B" feels a bit more universally human to me, in a way that has me nodding agreement and thinking "Right on!"...less

I'm in one of those reading lulls, where my mp3 player means everything and my bookshelf is buried behind a tall tower of bed linens and clean but unsorted laundry. I am unnaturally (dare I say preternaturally?) devoted to the Rice family, though, and after my acute disappointment with Christopher's new book, I knew that only Anne could save me. Oh, and Jesus. The Road to Cana picks up the life of Christ story shortly before his ministry begins in earnest, covering events such as Jesus's baptism, his temptations by Satan in the desert, the installation in Jerusalem of the new ruler Pontious Pilate, the gathering of the early disciples, and the water-to-wine miracle at the wedding in Cana. I love this series very much and enjoy the fictionalizing aspects, the filled-in details as well. It isn't nonfiction, after all, but it is humanizing and interesting to read about Jesus's life in imagined other moments that weren't captured in Scripture. My only quibbles are the terrible cover image of Jesus and the author's occasional lapse into descriptions and images that amount to absolutely nothing. That's a family fault, I think....less
