This book was interesting, but one more suited to the tastes of book critics and not readers looking for a compelling story, setting, or characters. At times, the book seemed overwritten, and I wish more attention had been placed on some of the relationships in the story and less on the cricket metaphor. He is best when he recounts the speech patterns and neighborhoods of some of the immigrant communities, but there are far too few instances in the book. The biggest strength is how the aftermath of the Sept 11 is described. For me, there were glimmers of recognition of the mood and fears of the year or two after the attacks, and he captures those feelings eloquently and realistically. On the whole, it was fine book, but somewhat tedious with an unsatisfactory ending....less

Interesting, dense, thoughtful book. Gives the reader a taste of Greek history, culture, modern life, and religion. Well written. It was written in the mid-90s, so there is an interesting historical context at play here, too, with the pending crisis in nearby Baltic dates, Greece just joining the E.U., and 9/11 being far in the future. Too bad that more travel essay books aren't written like this anymore....less
