A surprisingly intricate and emotionally resonant story. Egan had me completely invested in her damaged, awkward, compelling characters (how she draws Danny is extraordinary--his boots, the worm, his utter confusion about what's real and what isn't). Her various vocabularies are distinct enough to distinguish her characters for us without it seeming like she's trying too hard. This is one of those novels I couldn't wait to get on the train to read....less

"Like Case Histories, this novel is cleverly plotted, easy to read, and has a variety of clearly drawn characters, but it lacks depth somehow. I suppose I mean to say it's light. Which is a descriptor more than a criticism.

E.M. Forster is an old favorite of mine--I read all his fiction in college for a big project--so returning to Howards End is a treat in many ways. It reminds me of how funny and thoughtful and clever Forster is (in the Jane Austen vein), how I was at twenty when I read him for the first time (opening up my mind and heart), and how the longing and sensitivity in his books seems to mirror mine. He writes about the muddled inner lives of people limited by class and convention and about their often-thwarted desires for self-expression and love. This is the book with his famous admonition "Only connect," which sums him up tidily and which means a lot to me. ...less

I wanted to like this book, or at least to appreciate it (Rieff is a smart writer with a hell of a subject), but I find it hastily written, inadequately edited, and marred by the author's bitterness. Losing a parent can be a shocking and terrible thing, and Rieff seems stuck in his hurt and anger, as well as limited by his intellectual approach. He seems to want to understand something inherently inacessible to the mind. There's a lot of meandering what-if?-ing but no real commitment to personal excavation. I would have liked to see him risk a wider range of emotion in his exploration, as well as perhaps a little poetry. Those things might have better fit the book's loose structure. I wonder how the author will feel about Swimming a few years from now. For my money, Joan Didion's Magical Thinking is far superior....less

The poem "Praise Them" is reason enough on its own to buy this book. Lee's characteristic melancholy and spareness soak the poem, and its insight and imagery open up a huge space in my head.
Here are the opening lines:
"The birds don't alter space. They reveal it. The sky never fills with any leftover flying. They leave nothing to trace. It is our own astonishment collects in chill air. Be glad."
Birds and the sky figure throughout the collection, along with meditations on family--"Another word for father is worry"--and nature--"Regarding springtime, what is there to conclude"?. Lee's straightforwardness makes him accessible, but I always feel there's a deep tunnel under all his words. There is nothing casual about his writing, and not much that's light, either. Much of it is beautiful and welcoming, though....less

I bought this book because I'm so utterly uncomfortable with uncertainty, which is unfortunate since every day is a packed with moments in which nothing is certain. Pema Chodron is an American Buddhist nun, compassionate and thoughtful, and this little book collects 108 excerpts from her writings. Not having a Buddhist spiritual practice (and, apparently, not being that interested in developing one), I found some of the language--"tonglen," "paramita,"--beyond me. But many parts of the book, which focuses on curiosity, generosity, and being present, are relevant and helpful, and I turn to it regularly when I'm suffering and want to spin a little less....less
