I have been fascinated by many of my friend's comments on why they like or dislike a book. I'm going to throw out a thesis for discussion: That modern literary fiction is valued more for the quality of the writing than what the "story" says about the human condition and that this differs markedly from books written in the 19th and early twentieth centuries. So am I full of it or what. What got me thinking about this was the recent fascinating discussions about the Sokal hoax and the article in the Atlantic that ripped the incestuous relationship between reviewers and so called literary fiction for which the market, according to an article in the New Yorker a couple of years back, is barely 7,000 to 10,000 copies, or, sales mostly to libraries. So are modern literary authors speaking to themselves much as "new historians?" Feel free to invite your friends, but I'd like this discussion to cite books and be intelligent rather than to descend into single line, "hey, that's cool, dude," stuff. I'm pretty ignorant about this and look forward to a heated exchange....more
