This is a very mixed-emotion book. The different plots and conflicts, and why Cambell really needs the dog, are surprising and interesting. I really liked it.
Speaking of Cambell's explanations to why he needs the dog...
"I have an iron lung, and the dog keeps me from getting too close to magnets."

"I'm nearsighted. He helps me read the roadsides."

Well, the "humor" part of the story didn't really kick in until later, and there were some funny parts near the end. ]]>
