After the last two lackluster books in the Horus Heresy (“Descent of Angels” and “Legion”). I was very pleased to see the series get back to basics with some good old fashioned space marine whoop ass. This one covered the complete gamut from deep space naval combat to full on hand-to-hand combat with of course a touch of Chaos on top.
I also loved the intermingling of space marines chapters. It was cool as hell to see the Ultramarines fight side to side with the Space Wolves, Thousand Sons and even the crazed World Eaters. The choice of World Eaters and Thousand Sons fighting against the chaos turned Word Bearers was a nice touch since both those chapters are considered “Traitor Legions”and sided with Horus as well. Apparently, not everyone got the memo that the Emperor was bad.
Good going Black Library. Keep it coming. ...less

While he hasn't fallen as far as these two authors, Erikson takes a few steps closer to losing his story completely with this volume.
This book was on the fast track to a 1 or 2 star rating when it suddenly surged back on course during the final 200 pages. How I lasted that long, I'll never know, but frankly, I'm glad I did. Wondrous ending, with some huge plot twists to the overall tale. The last several chapters saved the entire book for me.
Unfortunately, the rest of the book is basically worthless. Literally, you could pick this one up around page 750 and lose NOTHING. What has grown extremely tiresome is that it seems EVERYONE in the book knows exactly what's going on when you the reader are left clueless. Though characters never reveal their knowledge, it's all just a wink and a nod as the story goes on. Too many secrets and vague statements that leave you scratching your head. However, the bright spots definitely hook you enough so stick around.
With two more to go, I hope Erikson can finish strong. The first 7 books were just too good to lose it all now.

Being an avid fantasy fan, it's shameful that I've missed out on Hobb all this time.
This is a sexist comment, but I generally find female authors quite boring. (There are a few exceptions: Mickey Zucker Reichart and Elizabeth Moon are decent enough.) Therefore, I had shied away from this series for years. Having mined through most of the genre and finding only fools gold amongst newer authors, I decided to take a chance with an older nugget.
Needless to say, I was very pleased with this novel. It set a great tone that kept my interest enough to read on through the rest of the series. I love the way the author succeeded in creating a very rich, in depth world while using only a very small part of it. There are plenty of “downtrodden, abused peasant boy rises to hero fame” themes throughout the genre, but Hobb chooses a very different direction. This time, the author abuses the main character throughout the book and doesn't stop. It's very dark and dreary. The life of the main character is a train wreck but you can't help but stop and stare.
I definitely recommend this book to any that haven't read it yet. ...less
