"Currently reading both this book and Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey. Both are fantastic but the contrast is giving me vertigo. From fluffy love-sick teenagers to intense mind-bending meditations on slavery, war, religion etc. And back again. I wonder if other people are like me in always reading books simultaneously. And if so, does one book affect the other? Because for me that's sort of how it is." — Jul 03, 2012 06:25am

This book is the latest stunt memoir by AJ Jacobs, the man who previously worked on his mind by reading the encyclopedia and his spirit by living according to the Bible. Now it's time for the body, and Jacobs spent two years focusing on how to be...

This is the first book I've read by Pym and on that basis alone, I will say she is in the tradition of Jane Austen (the main character's Emma Woodhouse comment acknowledges this), Trollope (whom the character Jane is a reader of) and even Gaskell'...

“The house-cat is a four-legged quadruped, the legs as usual being at the corners. It is what is sometimes called a tame animal, though it feeds on mice and birds of prey. Its colours are striped, it does not bark, but breathes through its nose instead of its mouth. Cats also mow, which you all have heard. Cats have nine liveses, but which is seldom wanted in this country, coz' of Christianity. Cats eat meat and most anythink speshuelly where you can't afford. That is all about cats."
