Each of the ten short stories in this collection should devastate you as a reader and as a writer. They are dark, uncompromising glimpses of vulnerability--not always human, and when human, not always precisely human--and sometimes that vulnerability...more

You already know whether you need to read this, based on the title alone. The narrator is a delight. September, our heroine, is full of spunk and pluck. Her companions are as inventive as they are loyal. Her enemies are tragic. And they all dwell in ...more

China Miéville is full of ideas and is an excellent wordsmith when he (or his publisher...who knows?) isn't dumbing things down as a disservice to YA readers. But his characters tend to be sketches, usually because he's busy outlining the arcane mech...more

This one's a mess. Plot threads that go nowhere, a generic narrative voice, and the unforgivable sin of a fantasy novel: it's kind of boring.

In some ways haunting and well written, this book is nonetheless probably best read as an artifact of its time. There's enough sexism and racism in here to gag a wide-grinnin' negro farmer's daughter, the dialogue all sounds the same, and the plot is...more

The narrator's buoyant perspective keeps this account of almost relentless hardship from becoming maudlin. The ending is rather tidy, though.

“Trust me, I'm telling you stories.”
Jeanette Winterson

Kurt Vonnegut
“Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”
Kurt Vonnegut

Marilynne Robinson
“In every important way we are such secrets from one another, and I do believe that there is a separate language in each of us, also a separate aesthetics and a separate jurisprudence. Every single one of us is a little civilization built on the ruins of any number of preceding civilizations, but with our own variant notions of what is beautiful and what is acceptable - which, I hasten to add, we generally do not satisfy and by which we struggle to live. We take fortuitous resemblances among us to be actual likeness, because those around us have also fallen heir to the same customs, trade in the same coin, acknowledge, more or less, the same notions of decency and sanity. But all that really just allows us to coexist with the inviolable, intraversable, and utterly vast spaces between us.”
Marilynne Robinson, Gilead

Jeanette Winterson
“Lies 1: There is only the present and nothing to remember.
Lies 2: Time is a straight line.
Lies 3: The difference between the past and the futures is that one has happened while the other has not.
Lies 4: We can only be in one place at a time.
Lies 5: Any proposition that contains the word 'finite' (the world, the universe, experience, ourselves...)
Lies 6: Reality as something which can be agreed upon.
Lies 7: Reality is truth.”
Jeanette Winterson, Sexing the Cherry

Douglas Adams
“The Answer to the Great Question... Of Life, the Universe and Everything... Is... Forty-two,' said Deep Thought, with infinite majesty and calm.”
Douglas Adams, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
