i still keep my First Edition copy of Cat's Eye safely inside my cabinet of books, and the good thing about a Margaret Atwood novel, especially when i look at my Cat's Eye copy whenever i rearrange my books, and now with The Handmaid's Tale, is how t...more i still keep my First Edition copy of Cat's Eye safely inside my cabinet of books, and the good thing about a Margaret Atwood novel, especially when i look at my Cat's Eye copy whenever i rearrange my books, and now with The Handmaid's Tale, is how they're carved out in my memory. how different it felt and how moving the story was that you couldn't shake it off your head after you read it. this is true for a lot of readers of Margaret Atwood, i'm pretty sure.

undeniably, it's her rich, pure languange and probably the things that she saw in her lifetime. i gaped at this woman's wisdom. it's the way Eugenides, Cunningham and Toni Morrisson trap you into the stories they've written based on their lifetime's worth of observation and survival. Atwood is a virtuoso in creating attacks of sentimentality and disturbances with her arrangement, which is stirring, full of pathos. the effect is that of a crisp afternoon with the leaves of dusk falling, collecting on the sides of the blanket where you sit, on a freshly turned, semi-damp earth whilst holding a book, the summer breeze that smells of the turning of the season and the ripening of daisies and peonies kissing your cheeks and you reach at the drying leaves on the sides, rake them with your fingertips and you crumple them till they become sandy grains in your hand like tea and you let them dart away from your grasp and be blown by the muggy air or your own lungs, like pollens scatterring in the air, and you, you sitting there, unsuspecting, wanting to pause it but you can't make that moment stay. sometimes there's the parachute flowers and you blew it against the red sky till it drifts away, gone, picked by invisible tongues. you close the book. you cannot put a finger on it.

like with only few books around, this is a reading experience so singular, so rare. what made this so frigthening is the fact that it's possible to happen, or it's prolly happening on some remote part of the world, only reconstructed and veiled.

the world of the Handmaids is simply devastating. i was awed and wowed by the narrative and the encompassing sadness of this novel. what made me so hooked is simply the plot, and the whiff of emotion in the author's words.

now i don't know which i like better, Cat's Eye or The Handmaid's Tale.(less)
