"Seriously, can you be American and not have read this book? It's entertaining as a child and poignant as an adult. Huck is a character that stays with the reader for years!

One of the best books I've ever read! I've never been able to read it again, for some reason the first read was exhilierating.
It is one of the few books that has made me cry. Not because of the sad ending, but because of what I think is a rejoiceful ending! A man tortured by the guilt of his human past, finally feses up and is freed from the guilt. His spirit overcomes the Natural Man within him. The cost he pays to let go of the weight of his mistakes is heavy, but I felt the triumph of his eterntal being when he did so.
Sigh! I loved it! :)...less

"Though a challenging read, this book is woven together masterfully! Every little detail comes to play in the end in this unforgetable story set during the French Revolution. I really liked it!! :)

Wow. A snoozer. I chose to read it for a class because I had fallen in love with "The Scarlet Letter" and wanted to read more of the author's work.
There was a beautifully tender romantic twist that I slightly rememember. And it taught a great moral: nobility and rich people should marry outside the family here and there to avoid the woes of inbreeding.
That...may be a more modern concept now that readers don't need as impressed upon them as they did in the days of Nathaniel Hawthorne....less

Slightly more Sci-fi than the author usually writes. It took me a little bit to get into it, but then was amazed at how the story wove together for the final surprise ending. I actually often think back to some of the ideas this book introduced. Sort of a "Back to the Future" meets "I am Legend" meets LDS-fiction!...less

This book is what got me hooked to "non-fiction"! It is the spectacular story of a ship captain who was shipwrecked with his crew on Antartica for TWO YEARS! All of the men survived, miraciously! The book is complete with photos from the ship photographer and reads almost like a fiction book. In fact, many scenes seemed straight from a Hollywood movie, almost unbelievable that they actually happened to real people! ...less

I love historical fiction. I Love Texas. This book combines the two!
The book is placed around the area of Texas I grew up, so it was interesting to me to learn of the area's history. I was fascinated by seeing pioneer life through the eyes of a pioneer woman "taming the west" with her husband. What was even more intriguing is that the author based the entire book on the lives and events of her own ancestors! Including Indian raids, etc.
I came away from this book with a deep appreciation for the pioneer women who helped change my home from an unpredictable wilderness to what it eventually is today. This book allows you to experience life from their eyes, and their perspective. It is written by a Christian author and thus has a very Southern-Christian tone to it. It's sold as a "romance" book, but the only romantic part about it is that the main characters meet the first chapter and marry a page later. The rest is how the love they had for each other and their family helped them transform the Texas wilderness, survive Indian attacks, and learn to forgive and press forward.
There are 4 books in "Texas Dreams" that continues this family saga up through the Author's line. I've only the read the first one, and give it 4 stars!...less

I had to read this book for a class in college and was deeply affected by it. I wish every parent in America would read this book!! Dr. Laura brings up a lot of important points about how parents are the one's that need to raise their children, not pay others to do it. The book really makes you think, and will hopefully help improve family life in America....less
