As usual N.D. Wilson is trying to do a lot of things all at once. This one is pretty good, though.

One Crazy Summer by Rita Williams-Garcia
“I had a lot of those memories clicking before me like projector slides in the dark. Lots of pictures, smells and sounds flashing in and out.”

One Crazy Summer by Rita Williams-Garcia
"When I heard that teen author Rita Williams-Garcia had written a middle grade novel for kids I wasn't moved one way or another. I don't read teen books. Couldn't say I knew much of the woman's work. When I heard that her book was about the Black P..." Read more of this review »

EXCELLENT. So very good. Ostensibly about famous leaders who derailed, it is really a book about the humility and selflessness it takes to be a good leader, and how often we fail at it.

Robinson Crusoe-esque, without Crusoe's philosophical musings and with sooo much science. Lots and lots of science. Weir's often stilted dialogue and corny characters betray his newness to novel writing. Still, he puts together a thriller composed of ...more

What do Christians in some of the most miserable circumstances on earth look like? They look like Richard Wurmbrand, unbreakable, joyful, and with the invincible hope of Jesus inside of them. Inspiring.

I cried at the end. "One Crazy Summer" is far too lighthearted a title for this rich, complex little story. I just adore Delphine because I identify with her deeply. The voice, the atmosphere, the characters. First impressions: brilliant.

Susan Fletcher
“Marjan. I have told him tales of good women and bad women, strong women and weak women, shy women and bold women, clever women and stupid women, honest women and women who betray. I'm hoping that, by living inside their skins while he hears their stories, he'll understand over time that women are not all this way or that way. I'm hoping he'll look at women as he does at men--that you must judge each of us on her own merits, and not condemn us or exalt us only because we belong to a particular sex.”
Susan Fletcher, Shadow Spinner

N.D. Wilson
“To love is to be selfless. To be selfless is to be fearless. To be fearless is to strip enemies of their greatest weapon. Even if they break our bodies and drain our blood, we are unvanquished. Our goal was never to live; our goal is to love. It is the goal of all noble men and women. Give all that can be given. Give even your live itself.”
N.D. Wilson, Empire of Bones

Jennifer A. Nielsen
“I need a sword first," I said. "People here keep taking mine.”
Jennifer A. Nielsen, The Runaway King

Barbara Cooney
“I believe that children in this country need a more robust literary diet than they are getting. …It does not hurt them to read about good and evil, love and hate, life and death. Nor do I think they should read only about things that they understand. '…a man’s reach should exceed his grasp.' So should a child’s. For myself, I will never talk down to, or draw down to, children.

(from the author's acceptance speech for the Caldecott award)”
Barbara Cooney, Chanticleer and the Fox

G.K. Chesterton
“When the wind came it split the sky and shouldered the cloud-band left and right; unbarring great clear furnaces of rolling gold.”
G.K. Chesterton
