I feel like I should enjoy this more than I did. I think the total concept is interesting, and it's the type of book that I usually love. I just didn't feel for the main character at all. She never became fully human to me.

"I twice got an A on a paper written about how much this book sucks. The first time was in high school and the ever assigned Heart of Darkness and Apocalypse Now. Thank the cosmic gasses that the movie is actually good or Seniors would be committin..." Read more of this review »

This book is designed to torture English majors. So boring, so awful, yet so widely taught. One of the only books I have physically thrown across a room.

The premise of this book is interesting. Unfortunately, the execution of it is not. Sebold is not a very talented writer, so the novel very very quickly falls into cliche and cheap sentimentality. The novel seems to spiral downhill very fast, until w ...more

This is an amazing novel. It's very different from most 18th-century novels. It's way more naturalistic, in that it's not as mannered and self-consciously 'literary' as a lot of the other novels of the time. Which is not to say that they are bad, it' ...more

I've heard a lot of complaints about the ending of this book, or about the way it jumps around to a few characters. But neither things bothered me in the slightest. I thought this was a great recreation of 19th century society - both as we, from our ...more

Another wonderful Atwood. She really captures the spirit of the time she is writing about, to the extent that you forget that this is a modern book. I would have liked more resolution, but that's a minor quibble about a fantastic book.
