A very gothic tale--I loved some of the language she used in this book. Some imagery was so detailed, as were some characters. My complaint would be that sometimes I was left wanting more about some characters; when she'd so painstakingly created them she would sometimes abandon them. I would have given this book 4 stars because I loved her attention to detail and description of colonial America. I felt like she started out so strong and I was really intrigued, but then in the middle of the book my interest dropped a little, so that I couldn't feel the intensity of the climax and enjoy the resolution. I first read this back when I was a teenager as required reading in school. I think it was much better as an adult. The voice is strong, her writing is good and she has a wonderful grasp of the english language, but the story is not strong, so most kids can't get into it (including a 9th grader in my carpool who was reading it the same time as me). Epic in scope and minute in detail, this book follows the life of an Englishman born in India during the Victorian Era. Not a quick read by any means, yet still worth the time investment for me. I even met a guy who was named after the main character because his parents were so moved by this book. I wouldn't normally pick up a book about the South in the 1960's, but this was so well-written--especially for a first-time novelist. It gave me some new perspectives on the racial tension at the time. I listened to some of it on Audible and the voices made the book come to life! There is some swearing, but I would recommend it still. ]]>
