I quit reading this at 20% last night. I picked it up because the cover is so atrocious. Someone went really heavy on the curly cues on that cover! Add in the dark eyebrows, blonde dye job, and photoshopped eye color... such a mess! I had to try it. ...more

Ugh! This is supposed to star a realistic 16 year old girl, but this could easily have been a 12 or 13 year old. The prose, story, and speech are terribly childish and I can't get into it at very well.

This book was all the things I ever wanted Hunger Games to be. Or rather, a realistic setting and an epic competition to save yourself. There's an asteroid due to hit Earth and kill everyone. Luckily, Atlantis was real and their people are back to sa ...more

Even though I mostly enjoyed this book, it was too short. Lots of parts of the story happened as if more had happened among the characters. There's a girl, Benny, who is a very special snowflake. She has this illustrious, impossible family tree (with ...more

“If we all worked on the assumption that what is accepted as true is really true, there would be little hope of advance.”
Orville Wright

Gore Vidal
“Life will be wonderful when men no longer fear dying. When the last superstitions are thrown out and we meet death with the same equanimity as life. No longer will children's minds be twisted by evil gods whose fantastic origin is in those barbaric tribes who feared death and lightning, who feared life. That's it: life is the villain to to those who preach reward in death, through grace and eternal bliss, or through dark revenge.”
Gore Vidal, Messiah

Sherwood Smith, Wren to the Rescue

Jon Stewart
“Most world religions denounced war as a barbaric waste of human life. We treasured the teachings of these religions so dearly that we frequently had to wage war in order to impose them on other people.”
