I admit I had no idea where this story was going when I began, and I thought the start was overly abrupt, although not surprising for Klosterman. I loved this book. I loved this book. I loved it more than Downtown Owl, which I enjoyed; this was much more amusing... a better, albeit completely unrealistic story comparatively. I loved it. I wish he had written a number of chapters more, because it only took me a few days to read (as all of his books have) and once again when I reached the end I was sad.

This is an unconventional novel with unconventional style, and he is really not naturally a novelist; the storyline of this book is not nearly as interesting as the observations of people alone, and perhaps the point to which I agree that none of these instances are altogether unlikely. The premise of the book, really, is that most people act weirdly when alone, that people are all weird in different ways, sometimes boringly so, sometimes hilariously so and sometimes tragically so. You'll identify with at least one of the characters, whether it's the protagonist or one of his stalkees.

I am not sure about the mass appeal of this story, but having read everything this writer has ever published, it was a no-brainer for me. I did not expect to enjoy it so much when I began, but after you realize where the story is going, about 25% through the book, it starts to grab you a little. Klosterman's characters, and his overall voice makes me laugh out loud, he is so sarcastic and insightful. I thought this was interesting, not because the story itself was interesting, but because the portraits painted of regular people were. The plot itself was just constructed to tell you about the others. I think the main character and the objects of his attention are well-written characters... I think the therapist, whose manuscript is the novel itself, leaves a lot to be desired. She and her husband contribute almost nothing to the story; they could have been anyone.

That said, a worthwhile read for any C.K. fan. I wish he would write faster so I had more excuses to burst into hysterical laughter while reading his books on my cross-trainer.(less)
