Story about the friendship between a boy and an appletree. Throughout their friendship, the boy is in need. At first, he needs shade, and the tree provides him with that. Later, he needs money. So the tree tells the boy to sell her apples. This relationship keeps going in this direction until one day the boy is an old man, and old man in need of a place to rest. The tree has nothing left but a stump to offer the man, and the old man gladly sits on the tree stump.
Children will love the heart-warming tale of this friendship as it shows them that friendship is about sharing and unconditional love.

One day, a young caterpillar was born and felt very hungry. So he ate, and he ate, and he kept eating! Finally the caterpillar forms a cocoon around himself to become a beautiful butterfly.
Children will love the illustrations and the interactive part of the book. As the caterpillar keeps eating, he eats hole through the pages of the book! I know I could resist poking my finger throught the pages.

Grade level: 1-3
Timothy is all ready for his first day of school in his brand-new homemade sun suit. When he gets to school though, he meets Claude. Claude is wearing the "right" clothes for the first day of school, and Claude does everything else right too. How will Timothy ever measure up? Timothy doesn't start to feel better until he meets Violet, a girl who is feeling the same way as him. Timothy and Violet become best friends, and realize they don't need to be jealous of those who seem "perfect."
Children will love the illustrations in this book, and they will be able to relate to how Timothy is feeling.
Possible themes/units: insecurity, friendship, beginning of school year ...less

Grades: 1-3
During lunchtime at school, Yoko brings out her homemade package. The only problem is that her mom made her sushi for lunch! Not a very "cool" thing to bring to school. All the other kids make fun of her lunch, what is she to do? Then Yoko's wise teacher plans an international food day at school, and finally the other kids are able to experience some of Yoko's life. She ends up making new friends and even trying new food herself.
Children will love the illustrations, and the story line. I think we all can relate to how Yoko felt when she was being made fun of, and this book certainly teaches young children that we can learn to celebrate our differences.
Possible themes/units: diversity, Japanese culture...less

When Ruby and Max are making a cake for Grandma, Max just wants to help, but he keeps making a mess! So, Ruby sends Max to the story time and time again to get her ingredients for the angel food cake, but all Max can think about is making an earthworm cake that has red hot marshmellow squirters on top. Will they finally be able to make a cake for Grandma?
Kids will love Rosemary's illustrations, and the story, since most children can relate to Max's having a sibling to deal with.

Stellaluna is a bat who gets separated from her mother during a dark night. She winds up living with a bird and her family, but still there are differences. Can she learn to live like a bird? Or will she go back to her bat ways?

Grade level: Kindergarten and up
When Chester the Racoon doesn't want to go to school for the first time, his mother assures him that he will be ok, and even gives him a "secret." Before he leaves, his mother kisses him on his palm and lets him know that whenever he is lonely, he can put his hand up to his cheek and get a kiss from his mother. He then returns this kiss to his mother so that she is not lonely while he is at school.
Heart-warming story that children, and their parents, who are heading off for school for the first time will love to hear since it will make the transition from home to school easier.
