Come on. I HAD to check it out. This book is hilarious. It's basically soft-core porn about Elizabeth and Darcy post-wedding, with juicy follow-up bits on other characters as well. The ironic thing is that for all the purple prose (Jane would DIE) it's got some wonderfully consistent bits about the other characters: Charlotte's letter relating Mr. Collins' unfortunate demise is PRICELESS. And overall, what strikes me here is that this is a unique reader response to Austen. What's happening here is that this writer is MAKING Elizabeth and Darcy into sexual beings, which they're simply not in Austen's book, because, let's be frank, Austen was almost certainly not capable of writing sexual beings on the page. Silly, embarrassing to get caught reading in public, but if you've ever had a naughty Darcy fantasy, worth picking up . . . really....less

Jury's still out because I'm only a little way in, but I love finding British books that are so "British" they almost don't translate. . . this reminds me a great deal of Carter's *Wise Children,* steeped in theatre and the world of the theatre. Very mannered but fun so far. I'd even teach it as an exemplar of creating character quickly on the page....less

Wow. My best friend has been trying to get me to read more Gilchrist for years and finally I pulled this off my shelf. Phenomenal. Funny, outrageous, so Southern and so wise, echoes of Salinger and Cheever and others of "older" eras but so distinctly female a voice. Read "Anna, Part 1" then go back and read Cheever's "The Country Husband," for one thing. Beautiful, beautiful stories....less

I read this years ago, loaned it out, and then thought it was lost forever. But then the friend I'd loaned it to returned it and now I'm re-reading. It's a fascinating experience now that I'm working as a writer and realize that this is a first novel. It's quite a powerful book, and I will no doubt mystify people reading this by saying that the writer elevated her story from good to great by writing--at times--from the point of view of some pigs....less
